Specific Populations Programmes & Services  

District Nursing
Provides primary care nursing in the home and arrange for other supportive services for  patients, care-givers and the general public. The target group primarily the elderly.

Hours: 7 days per week, 8:15 a.m. to 4:15pm

Health Promotion Office
Develops and coordinates activities and programmes to promote lifestyles, environments and policies that are conducive to well being and health. The Health Promotion Office encourages the community to take the lead in improving health, and conducts population health surveys. The Department of Health provides lectures and presentations, on request, to schools PTAs, clubs and organisations on a variety of health related topics. The emphasis is on preventive health services and health education.

Requests for lectures or presentations should be addressed to the relevant programme, as listed on the web site, or to the Health Promotion Office.

Home Resource Aids
Provides personal care to the elderly, and the physically and mentally challenged  in  their homes. They work closely with Health Visitors and District nurses.

Maternal Health and Family Planning
Provides counselling and evaluation of women of childbearing age on matters of reproductive health.  This includes family planning, pregnancy care, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, pap smears and breast exams.

Nutrition Services
Promotes optimal nutrition and fitness through the provision of accurate nutrition information to the public.  Consults with government and nongovernmental agencies on foodservice issues. Conducts nutrition surveys and product surveillance. Provides assessment and counselling of referred individuals.

Occupational Health Services
The Department of Health provides health supervision for prisons inmates, police, prison and fire officers.

Community Physiotherapy Service
Promotes functional independence by providing assessments and individualised programmes and education for seniors and physically challenged individuals, at home or in residential care facilities. Young children with severe delays in normal motor development, who do not have access to physiotherapy at other facilities, may be serviced via medical referral.

Occupational Therapy Service
Provides assessment and treatment of individuals with disabilities to rehabilitate and maximise the individual’s functional independence. Clients are treated in the home or in residential care facilities.

Opportunity Workshop
Opportunity Workshop is a training centre for young adults, eighteen years of age and older, with learning and/or physical disabilities.  Its objective is to provide opportunities for continued development of functional, social and vocational skills to promote independent living in the community.  Opportunity Workshop works in partnership with other divisions of the Department of Health to provide clients with dental and nutrition services, as well as regular occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language therapy.  Admission to the programme is based on medical confirmation of disability status and assessment of functional abilities.

Orange Valley
Orange Valley is the recommended service for adults with cognitive challenges.  It is dedicated to promoting and enhancing quality of life through a wide array of services.  A few features are day release placements, screenings and intervention.  Orange Valley offers recreational, educational and multi-sensory programmes, along with a daily bus service and a dynamic, social summer programme.  Through partnership with the Department of Health, the Centre provides dental and nutritional assessment, speech and physical therapy maintenance.  Referrals are accepted from Family Services, the Ministry of Education & Development, and self-referrals.

Seniors’ Health & Wellness Clinics
Provide seniors with services that promote healthy behaviours and lifestyles that help to maintain and to improve health, quality of life and independence. Provide blood pressure screening and monitoring, blood sugar screening, nutrition assessment and counselling, home safety and functional assessments of activities for daily living, adult immunizations, and prevention guidance in the areas of aging, safety, medication, falls and chronic illnesses,.
